[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]St. Martin\u2019s Day is upon us and in Portugal it is the height of the Magusto<\/em>, a celebration of autumn\u2019s bounty and the ripening of both chestnuts and the year\u2019s new wine.\u00a0The Portugal Pavilion brought the joys of this autumn festival to Dubai with children’s stories, traditional songs and roasted chestnuts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The initiative came from a group of mothers, living in Dubai, who gathered dozens of children in the amphitheater of the Portuguese pavilion, where they heard St. Martin\u2019s legend and celebrated the occasion along with the official mascots of Expo 2020 \u2013 Latifa and Rashid.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_images_carousel images=”5985,5975,5983,5981,5987,5977″ img_size=”full” speed=”7000″ autoplay=”yes” wrap=”yes”][vc_empty_space height=”80px”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

HOW DOES PORTUGAL CELEBRATE ST. MARTIN’S DAY?<\/h4>\n

On or around November 11th, the Portuguese gather around bonfires and fireplaces to drink, talk, laugh, eat chestnuts, and celebrate the bountiful harvest and coming of winter.\u00a0These celebrations are called Magusto\u00a0<\/em>(believed to come from the Latin magnus ustus<\/em> or \u201cgreat fire\u201d), and traditions vary around the country.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to the Portuguese, legend has it that on one cold day Martin was riding his horse when he came across a beggar. The man was sorely underdressed and shivering in the cold as he called out to Martin for alms. Martin had nothing to give him, so he drew his sword and cut his cloak in half to give the beggar something to keep warm. At that very moment, the clouds parted, and the sun shone for 3 days.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is believed the miraculous change in weather was due to Martin\u2019s act of charity, and the warm, clear days often seen in early November have become known in Portugal as ‘St. Martin\u2019s Summer’.\u00a0At about the same time, the chestnuts begin to ripen and the first of the year\u2019s wine is ready to sample, as well as other alchoholic beverages made from the semi-processed grapes, such as\u00a0agua-p\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0jeropiga<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As we say in Portugal: \u00c9 dia de S\u00e3o Martinho. Comem-se castanhas; prova-se o vinho!<\/em><\/strong>
