[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]Portugal celebrated the 500th<\/sup> anniversary of the First World Circumnavigation at Expo 2020 Dubai, with the inauguration of an urban art sculpture and a powerful message on ocean conservation. The ceremony was held this Sunday, 24 October, outside the Portugal Pavilion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Portugal Pavilion unveiled a street art sculpture, titled \u201cMagellanic Penguins\u201d, in tribute to the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who led the nautical expedition that was completed by the Spaniard Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Elcano, and would become the first-ever circumnavigation of the globe (1519-1522).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Signed by Portuguese artist Bordalo II, the installation is made entirely from ocean plastics \u2013 collected from the seas of the countries covered by the circumnavigation \u2013 to highlight the escalating plastic waste crisis and the global threat to our planet\u2019s marine life. The art piece is a call to action, especially for younger generations, to ensure a more sustainable relationship with the ocean and its ecosystems.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_images_carousel images=”5347,5426,5428″ img_size=”full” speed=”7000″ autoplay=”yes” wrap=”yes”][vc_empty_space height=”80px”][vc_column_text]\u201cThese are all high-density, end-of-life plastics, which can eventually be recycled if they go to the right place, something that often doesn’t happen,\u201d said the 33-year-old artist, in an interview with Lusa.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And what is needed to fight climate change, after all? \u201cI think we need to talk less and do more,\u201d he replied. \u201cI think it’s a big mistake for big corporations to pass on this idea that it solely depends on us, common citizens, and not on them\u201d, while \u201cthey can continue to manufacture cars, to package products and to incentivize production of ‘fast fashion’, for example, as if it were something perfectly normal, when it only encourages consumption\u201d, but it is people who have to make \u201cthe right choices to change the world\u201d, said Bordalo II.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The ceremony was attended by the Secretary of State for Internationalisation Affairs, Eurico Brilhante Dias<\/strong>; Portugal\u2019s Commissioner-General to Expo 2020 Dubai, Lu\u00eds Castro Henriques<\/strong>; and President of the Mission Structure for the Commemorations of the 500th<\/sup> Anniversary of Circumnavigation, Jos\u00e9 Marques<\/strong>, as well as the artist Bordalo II<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Eurico Brilhante Dias said that it is \u201cPortugal’s contribution to raise awareness about the oceans, a topic that is very dear to us\u201d, then, \u201cit is a part of our post-Expo legacy because this intervention will remain here in the United Arab Emirates and it is Portugal’s offer\u201d to the country, he added.<\/p>\n

The inaugural event also featured traditional dance and musical performances by Pauliteiros of Miranda do Douro<\/strong> (a Portuguese traditional stick dance) and the musical duo\u00a0Lu\u00edsa Amaro and Gon\u00e7alo Lopes<\/strong>, on the Portuguese guitar.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_images_carousel images=”5434,5430,5448,5454,5458,5442,5452,5460″ img_size=”full” speed=”7000″ autoplay=”yes” wrap=”yes”][vc_empty_space height=”80px”][vc_column_text]The Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP)<\/strong><\/a> launched this initiative in partnership with the Mission Structure for the Commemorations of the 500th<\/sup> Anniversary of Circumnavigation<\/strong><\/a>, a government entity, to highlight the cultural, scientific, and technological legacy of Magellan\u2019s historic journey.<\/p>\n

The event also coincides with the annual United Nations Day \u2013 an opportunity to showcase Portugal\u2019s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals at Expo 2020 Dubai.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Lusa, the president of the Mission Structure, Jos\u00e9 Marques<\/strong>, said that \u201cit is precisely this with an extraordinary artistic piece of Portuguese creativity by our artist Bordalo II that we are valuing the ocean\u201d, from which \u201call cultural and economic currents have developed [\u2026] Today is an opportunity with a very special symbolism, we are in Dubai, we are in the Portugal Pavilion and here we are celebrating a feat, a feat that is a milestone in the history of Humanity, the first integral global vision of the world, a world mainly formed by ocean\u201d, added Jos\u00e9 Marques.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
